Bees and Butterflies

Question....Is there any way I can have plants which only attract butterflies and not bees?
I have children and don't want them to get stung.

Butterflies and bees are all going after the same thing....flowers with nectar and/or pollen.
If you have nectar producing plants you'll have both. In general, you can't have one without the other, and I usually have many more bees than butterflies.

I'd suggest planting taller plants which you can stake or vines you train up wires or trellises.

You could also totally fence in an flower area to keep the kids out, but that seems drastic unless your kids are allergic to bee sting. I'd also try defining your garden area with rock or fencing and teach the kids not to go into the garden without supervision.

I'm outside a lot and only was stung once last year, and that was only because I pushed up against a bee. I've found that unless I physically touch a bee, they won't bother me.

You need to educate your kids to stay calm, watch where they walk and not panic if they see a bee. Almost always, bees are much more interested in feeding than in stinging you.
