I do very little mulching. Many plants that I have, re-seed themselves and if I mulched, the new seedlings would have a much tougher time. Liatris has a very small seed and the plant it sends up could be buried under new mulch or might having trouble sprouting through the standard two inches of mulch which some people add.
If you want to mulch, you might consider waiting until later spring/early summer. That way you can see the new plants sprouting and not cover them over with mulch.
Also, whenever I divide plants, move plants or add new plants to any part of my garden, I'm adding compost or peat moss to improve the soil. If I had mulch in the area, it's much tougher to work with the soil than if it is bare.
Mulch is great if you want to keep down weeds, reduce watering, and cut your gardening time, the standard reasons for applying mulch, but for more energetic gardeners, it just gets in the way.
I do mulch around trees and bushes.
