The Top 15 Most Common Butterflies

In the book, "Butterflies through Binoculars...the East," Jeffrey Glassberg identifies approximately 318 butterfly species. Don't panic ! You don't need to learn all 318 types. There are actually very few butterflies left in a typical city garden.

What might be easier is to start with the basic butterflies and learn to identify them one at a time. The list below will show you a picture of each butterfly as you mouser over the name. These are all very common butterflies in the St. Louis area and can generally be found in most areas..

If you own a digital camera, try taking a picture of the butterfly, put it on your computer and look at it at your leisure. Some butterflies however, move so quickly that taking a standard picture is just not possible. In those situations I use a video camera to help in identification.

Here's my Top 15 Most Common Butterflies List. Put your mouse over the name to see the picture.
